Established in 2001, the Department of Human Resource Management (HRM) is dedicated to advance human resource management knowledge and cultivate human resource management talents. Its current academic programs and activities have the following unique and attractive characteristics.
The undergraduate program of HRM emphasizes on systematic thinking and “learning by doing”, which can encourage students to participate in useful and interesting learning activities, including field studies, experiments, diagnostic and consulting projects, campus competitions, off-campus internship and trainee programs, and seminars on HRM. All of which enable students to integrate their academic knowledge (why) with managerial practice and actions (how). As a result, students graduated from the department have been very successful in job hunting in both profit-oriented and non-profit- oriented organizations with their employers showing high appreciation for the students’ comprehensive knowledge and skills in HRM as well as their responsibility, team spirit and ability to innovate.
On the other hand, faculty members of the department are specializing in several important academic areas, such as talent management, labor policy, social security, employee relations, strategic HRM, assessment, organizational behavior, and their research has been supported by funding from many sources, including National Natural Science Foundation of China, Science Foundation of Ministry of Education of China, and Natural Science Foundation of Guangdong Province.
According to the role of modern human resource management in the organization, the core knowledge of this major is divided into 5 areas:
1) Basic competence of the manager: the basic capabilities required for management;
2) Affairs experts: practical operation of specific affairs in human resource management;
3) Employee motivator: balance the rights and interests of labor and capital, and stimulate the morale of employees;
4) Strategic partners: participate in the organization of strategic management and implement it in the human resource management system;
5) Reformers: future and development orientation, promoting and guiding change and innovation.
Accordingly, the curriculum system consists of these five modules, which are further divided into specialized core courses and specialized elective courses (30 credits are required).
A wide range of elective modules allow students to enhance their employability prospects in their preferred fields. In particular, HRM action plan is required as a part of practice experiences.
