Young Scientists Forum, Focusing on Racial Bias and Smart Port-Harbor Optimization

November 5, 2025 Published

On November 3, 2025, the 14th-15th Young Scientists Forum of Shenzhen University’s College of Management was held in Mingli Building A205. Hosted by Vice Dean Prof. Chen Xingyu, the forum featured two scholars: Dr. Li Zhefei (Fudan University) and Dr. Wu Yiwei (Hong Kong Polytechnic University). Over 50 teachers and students attended online and offline, with positive feedback.

Dr. Li Zhefei, a Fudan postdoctoral fellow, focuses on strategic HR, resource-based view and institutional theory. His work appears in Strategic Management Journal and Journal of Business Research, with multiple international conference best paper nominations.

Dr. Wu Yiwei, from Hong Kong Polytechnic’s Logistics and Maritime Studies Department, specializes in stochastic programming and smart port management. He has 31 high-level publications (e.g., Production and Operations Management), 2 patents, and a 2024 MOE Scientific Research Excellence Award (Third Prize).

Dr. Li’s report, “When You Discriminate, I See Opportunities”, used NBA coach hiring data to explore racial bias’ dual role. He found that underestimated candidates’ racial identity may become a “value signal”, leading to “labor market arbitrage”. Black coaches with high performance or cross-racial resignation were more likely to be rehired, offering new insights into bias dynamics.

Dr. Wu’s talk, “Smart Port-Harbor Operation Optimization”, presented his large-scale optimization research. For liner fleet deployment under uncertainty, he built a multi-stage stochastic model with a Benders decomposition algorithm to boost efficiency. For inland shipping, his team’s lock-aware scheduling model alleviated congestion via dynamic linearization.

In discussions, attendees focused on racial bias research localization, port model implementation, and ML-OR integration. Dr. Li suggested Chinese enterprise data for localized studies; Dr. Wu emphasized balancing model complexity and practicality, planning to use digital twins for smarter systems.

Prof. Chen summarized that the forum showed management-OR integration: Dr. Li’s micro-level bias research and Dr. Wu’s macro system optimization offered a “theory-method-practice” paradigm for young scholars.

As a key School platform, the forum connects students with global scholars. Future sessions will focus on digital economy, sustainability and intelligent decision-making to drive interdisciplinary innovation.
